Write a Journey

Describe a trip taken by motorhome, train or car.  Begin in action by revealing a challenge to solve, an encounter with a stranger, or a scenic adventure's revelation.

Intrigue the reader with details.  Get rolling on the rails or asphalt!

  1. It was always a long drive from Oregon to visit the relatives in Nebraska. Wyoming, in particular, was a boring stretch for my sister Kris and I to sit quietly in the back seat. Mom had her vanity case, or whatever those square little suitcases were called, on the floor by my feet. That, of course, was annoying (even though I had plenty of room), so I tried to move it over to Kris' side of the car. Well, a faux fight began. Me: "You're younger and shorter; it should be on YOUR side." Kris: "No sir! Mom put it on YOUR side!" Mom tried to hush us, but was half-hearted in her admonition. She was sleepy because it was dang hot in our '64 Ford Falcon, even though the windows were down for relief. Without air conditioning, we were miserable. As Kris and I pushed the vanity case back and forth ... oops. It popped open. To our surprise, the only thing that that flew out of the case, and then my window, was Mom's bra. Good thing she has a great sense of humor. We spent the next hour guffawing, wondering what the people in a car behind us thought as a gigantic piece of lingerie flew toward them. Oh. Forgot to mention a revelation. Wellll, instead of being mad, Mom laughed even harder than we did. And when we arrived at our favorite stop in Wyoming -- Little America -- each of us were allowed to pick out a fun gift. I do still wonder, though, how the miniature bongo drums I carried out of that store disappeared before we arrived in Omaha.
