Writer's DUI

Writer’s DUI

I grip the wheel stung

by consonants and vowels.

Nouns smudge the windshield.

As windows swarm with phrases

Verbs whine, bite and beg me

to pick up a pen at 65 mph.

“Write me. Me. Me. Me.

Ideas flash and honk my horn.

They force swerves and street slaloms

as I sing to stay on the road.

When mind fireflies go incandescent,

I beg for red lights or stop signs.

Oh, let traffic slow.

On manic freeways

No stopping places

when the buzz heightens.

If I’m cuffed and get a DUI for writing,

will the kind officer trade the ticket

for my signature on a poem?

Writing Practice

Following the routine of a writing practice assists to shape thoughts, feelings and adjust behaviors in all aspects of our lives. After a period of time and word enthusiasm, we learn about ourselves and how to excavate ways into our challenges with words. This takes advantage of the brain's ability to form new habits.

We know from PET and MRI technology, that the brain can add neurons as a result of our activities.

As we increase an activity, the more connections the neurons discover. The wiring strengthens.

Writing with the senses, we become involved with awareness and even taste food in a different way.

Touch, scents, and hearing heighten along with sight and perception. We learn what provides a thrill and what it takes to remove angst and frustration as we write from mood to mood.

Alter moods today with writing practice.

Activate Energy

Kaizen

Kaizen (Japanese) means continuous improvement.

Tiny incremental changes in our habits and behavior may slide into mammoth results.

Setting manageable goals increases their likelihood of attainment.

Raise the activation energy for habits you want to adopt; lower it for habits to avoid.

Jump start positive change.

"Perhaps the most 'spiritual' thing any of us can do is simply to look through our own eyes, see with the eyes of wholeness, and act with integrity and kindness."
