Lateral thinking involves solving problems using an indirect and creative approach with reasoning not immediately obvious. First used in 1967 by Maltese psychologist Edward de Bono in his book, The Use of Lateral Thinking.
Logical thinking solves problems in a direct, straightforward way (also known as vertical thinking). Lateral thinking observes from a sideways perspective (also known as horizontal thinking), to discovers answers.
Try these:
Name an ancient invention still in use today that allows people to see through walls.
A dog falls out of a thirty story building, but lives. With luck and the landing pad not factors, how could the dog have survived the fall?
Twelve people take a single egg from a carton of a dozen. There is one left in the carton. How?
Answers:
Window.
Dog falls from first floor window.
The last person takes the carton with the egg in it.
With a question for this tree, play with lateral thinking today.
