Write What Haunts Your Curiosity.

"I never set out to write any one thing," says Andre Dubus III. "I just set out to write daily and it becomes what it becomes."

His novel, The Garden of Last Days grew out of an image in his mind of a wad of cash on a dresser.  He believes, "We can't choose what haunts us."

Dubus has a gift for imaginative empathy for people and combines it with a place he knows well.  House of Sand and Fog portrays a former Iranian Colonel and a recovering drug addict who struggle over a house in California they long to possess. Dubus notices details and connects them with words.

Creative Write: Notice something today. Let it haunt you with curiosity. Write and let it lead you into a story or poem.
