Lost in Abstraction

A song sparrow empties itself of excess seeds.
Falling to fertile ground, shells fly open.
Soon, cotyledons spring to life.

A stalk arises, bursts into marigold
where bees and hummingbirds sip.

By adulthood, most human beings
have heard the words:
     Responsibility.
          Respect.
              Reciprocity.

Many have discarded their meaning
among the beer bottles and refuse.
When neglect collects to cluster on the cliff.
