Use of Temperature in Writing

Bring the reader into an experience by warming or cooling them. Use of the effects of heat and cold adds texture to writing.

Keep a list of types of temperatures you experience during the day.

How does it feel leaving the warmth of a bed?
Write a sensation when feet meet a cold floor.
Find ways to describe the prickles of heat or cold in a shower.
Discover cold and hot sensations that breakfast provides.
Let your body experience breezes that cool your neck.
Feel the sun on your nose, chin, and ears.
Let your fingers find cold and tepid spots on railings.
Imagine brain freeze and a coffee or pizza burned palate.
Open the refrigerator and describe the sensation.
Roll in cool grass.

After you've collected your experiences with temperatures, respond to each. Add details to tantalize readers and bring them into the feelings with you.
