What's in the Glass

Many discuss if the glass is half full or half empty. Writers describe the wonders of the glass itself.

Imagination relies on an empty state. Painting and sculpture fill the empty space. Stories count on space to grow. Writers begin with the empty page or screen.

Freedom from restrictions enables us to discover creative potential.

Creative Write: Wander into the vibrance of emptiness. Design a metaphor that shows the miracles of life with all its challenges and creativity.

Move about the empty spaces and fill them with wonder.

Write About Birds

Today is National Bird Day. Celebrate our winged and feathered friends by observing or recalling an experience with a bird.

Black Phoebe

I call him Flash Fleetwing,
a bird to train in my hand,
yet he’d never permit it.
Fred Astairing the breeze he
plucks food on the fly.
Dressed to kill in charcoal waistcoat,
inverted V white bib,
probably monogrammed,
he thrills air.
Sycamore branch to lamppost,
he mocks gravity and breeze
who skirmish for his attention.
My whistling swivels his head.
Top feathers go crewcut,
insistent with pheep, pheep. pheep.
Birders say he protects his territory
when he zooms me that way.
What do they know of friendship?

Write into the taste and scent of a book.

"With my eyes closed, I would touch a familiar book and draw its fragrance deep inside me. This was enough to make me happy. "
― Haruki Murakami

A write life requires reading from a variety of sources. List ten books that have affected your style and storytelling ability.

Notice if you choose stories about characters or plot-driven novels.

Consider the use of metaphor and sensory imagery.

Do biographies or autobiographies figure in your selection?

Which genres do you prefer in fiction?

How do non fiction and poetry weave into your personal library?

Think about how your list has changed over the years.

Creative Write: After you have made the list and added comments in response to the questions, write to the titles. Discover how these books play and advise one another in your freewriting.
